Collimator Assembly for Neutron Beam

This system was designed and manufactured for the Los Alamos National Laboratory. The collimator was designed to be positioned between the exit of the neutron guide and the sample position which is approximately 3m away. It controls the cross-sectional area of the neutron beam reaching the sample and, because of motion parallel to the neutron beam, it controls the size of the umbra/penumbra (at the sample position) associated with the beam divergence. The system is comprised of two sets of two collimating jaws (vertical and horizontal). The guillotine style jaws are made of boron nitride. One set is placed at a fixed location approximately 1.5 m between the exit of the guide and the sample position. The other set is supported from above and is moveable from a fully extended position adjacent to the sample position to a retracted position approximately 1m from the sample position.
